Taking Action – Preparing for a Career in Animation and Games

As I approach graduation, I’ve been focused on preparing myself for entry into the animation and game industries. Over the past few months, I’ve been actively developing a professional portfolio, refining my creative direction, and planning how to present my skills to potential employers.

My current portfolio includes a range of works from both my undergraduate studies in game art and my postgraduate training in character animation. It showcases 2D and 3D character design, a set of original character cards with unique visual identities, and collaborative projects created with studios during my studies. From the animation side, it features my contribution to a project for the LIAF (London International Animation Festival), as well as my completed graduation film, which reflects my personal visual style and narrative approach.

I plan to tailor my portfolio based on the type of studio and role I am applying for. When targeting game studios, I will highlight my character design and concept work while treating animation as a bonus skill that adds depth to my characters. For animation studios, I will focus more on my animation process, including character performance, emotional movement, and stylized 2D visual development. This flexibility allows me to respond to different industry needs while still showcasing a consistent artistic identity.

In past internship applications, I received valuable feedback from industry professionals. One suggestion was to develop a more defined personal style—even though I can adapt to different visual directions, focusing on one that reflects my passion would help me stand out more clearly. Taking this advice, I’m working to identify the aesthetic and narrative tone I feel most connected to, and refining how that is expressed across different projects in my portfolio.

Beyond the creative work, I’m also preparing my professional presence. I’ve updated my CV and plan to send targeted applications to studios whose values and visual language align with mine. I’m building my presence on LinkedIn and other professional platforms to expand my network, follow company updates, and connect with industry professionals. Rather than waiting passively for opportunities, I aim to reach out directly to studios I admire and present my work in a thoughtful and personalized way.

Overall, this stage of preparation is helping me clarify both my professional goals and creative direction. My skills in drawing, animation, and character design are now supported by a growing understanding of how to present myself within the industry. Through a focused, adaptable portfolio and proactive communication, I hope to take the next steps toward a career in an animation or game studio that values emotion, storytelling, and original visual expression.
